A maintenance guide from Jiande Shuangjian Tools (Hangzhou Pro Tools Import & Export Co., Ltd.)
Magnetic tips and bit holders are small details that create big gains—faster one-handed starts, fewer dropped fasteners, and smoother assembly in tight spaces. To keep those advantages over the full life of a tool, technicians and buyers need a clear plan to maintain magnetic strength.
Construction methods we use:
Embedded magnet design (common in SJT-SS and SJT-M): a small NdFeB or ferrite magnet sits behind the bit or inside the socket, delivering consistent holding force across interchangeable bits.
Induction-magnetized blade (common in SJT-S): the steel tip is magnetized after CNC grinding and heat treatment for a compact, cost-effective solution.
Materials matched to duty:
S2 tool steel (target hardness HRC ~58–62): excellent edge retention on PH/Torx/PZ profiles.
Chrome-vanadium (Cr-V) (target hardness HRC ~52–56): robust value choice for general service.
Understanding the build tells you which practices protect magnetism and tip geometry.
Magnetism rarely “disappears” on its own; it’s usually weakened by environment or abuse. Here are the main culprits in workshop use:
Cause | Why it weakens magnets | Where you’ll see it | Prevention |
---|---|---|---|
Heat | Elevated temperatures randomize magnetic domains | Near soldering/heating, engine bays, ovens | Keep tips away from sustained heat; avoid direct flame |
Hard impact | Shock can disturb magnet alignment | Dropping drivers on concrete, hammer strikes on non-impact tools | Use go-through/impact drivers for striking; store securely |
Opposing fields | Strong external magnets can partially demagnetize | Magnetic chucks, degaussers, large speakers | Store tips away from high-flux sources |
Abrasive wear | Material removal reduces pole area at the tip | Aggressive misuse, grinding tips to “fit” | Use the right size; replace worn bits |
Iron filing build-up | Debris forms a “bridge,” reducing net holding force | Cutting/grinding nearby | Clean tips frequently with a cloth/IPA |
Clean after use
Wipe tips with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Remove iron filings and cutting dust from the magnet cavity of bit holders.
Use the correct size and profile
A precise PH/Torx/PZ match reduces cam-out and metal loss at the tip—both help magnetic retention and extend tool life. Jiande Shuangjian’s DIN/ISO CNC grinds are designed for full recess engagement.
Avoid unnecessary heat
Keep magnetized tips away from heat guns, open flame, or prolonged contact with parts above typical workshop temperatures. Where heat is unavoidable, switch temporarily to a non-magnetic driver or re-magnetize after the operation.
Choose the right tool class
For striking tasks, use go-through/hammering screwdrivers (our impact/hammer-through ranges), not standard magnetic drivers. This avoids shock damage to both magnet and tip.
Store correctly
Use trays, pouches, or rails. Separate drivers from high-flux magnets and degaussing equipment. For sets with embedded magnets, keep bits seated in their sockets during transport.
Inspect and rotate bits
Replace rounded bits promptly. Rounded edges reduce both engagement and effective magnetic “face,” cutting holding force on tiny screws.
If a tip’s magnetism weakens, in many cases you can restore it:
Magnetizing block or “magnetizer/demagnetizer” tool
Draw the tip slowly through the “Magnetize” side several times, rotating to cover all flutes/edges. This re-aligns domains at the tip.
For embedded-magnet holders
If the holder’s insert has lost strength, replacing the internal magnet or the bit-holder head is the most reliable fix. Our SJT-M and SJT-SS designs support serviceable holders on request.
Check tip geometry first
If the bit is badly worn, re-magnetizing won’t compensate. Replace the bit; new edges plus fresh magnetization restore full performance.
Note: Around magnet-sensitive components (reed switches, magnetometers, certain sensors), use low-flux tips or temporarily demagnetize using the demagnetize side of a block.
Use low-flux variants and ESD-safe handles (available on request).
Keep solvents away from TPR/PVC grips; use IPA for metal only.
Prefer micro-drivers with free-spin caps and magnetic bit sockets for precise starts.
Select S2 bits for T20–T30 and PH2–PH3; combine with fine-tooth ratcheting for repetitive panels.
Clean filings often—grinding sparks can accumulate on magnets and reduce grip.
For deep wells, use long magnetic extensions to maintain concentric alignment.
If you operate near live circuits, choose VDE-certified insulated screwdrivers; magnetization should be paired with certified insulation, not substituted for it.
Keep insulated tools away from direct heat sources to preserve both dielectric and magnetic performance.
Temperature: Room temperature storage; avoid prolonged exposure to dashboards, ovens, or attics.
Humidity: Dry storage prevents corrosion under oxide/phosphate finishes.
Separation: Keep magnetized tips a short distance from precision measuring tools, bank cards, or magnetic stripe IDs.
Transport: For SJT-SS sets, transport with bits inserted; this protects the magnet cavity and reduces shock.
When specifying magnetic screwdriver sets for retail or industrial programs, include:
Tip material & hardness (S2 vs. Cr-V, target HRC).
Magnet style & target holding force (e.g., retention for typical M3–M5 screws).
Finish (black oxide/phosphate for bite and low glare).
Handle polymer (TPR, PVC, acetate; ESD/VDE options).
Packaging (double-blister, clamshell, eco-kraft, pouch) and labeling (barcode, size map).
Model coding: adopt SJT-S / SJT-SS / SJT-M / SJT-H for quick factory communication.
Our R&D team releases 50+ new products/year, and we support rapid sampling plus OEM color/logo integration to match your brand system.
Controlled magnetization: Embedded NdFeB or induction-magnetized tips tuned for real fastener masses.
Precision geometry: DIN/ISO-matched CNC grinds to reduce cam-out and preserve edges.
Serviceability: Replaceable bit-holder heads and replenishment bits across SJT-SS/SJT-M lines.
Quality systems: ISO-aligned production and routine mechanical, hardness, and retention checks.
